Searching the Thesaurus Using the Thesaurus Lookup

Searching for a Term Starting With a String

  1. Click the Thesaurus icon next to an authority controlled field in a Catalogue Display, Patron Display, Thesaurus Display, Catalogue Search, Catalogue Search or Thesaurus Search screen. The Thesaurus Look Up screen is displayed

  2. Select Author, Series, Subject or other type from the Type pop-up list

  3. Select Starting With from the Search Type drop-down list. This value will be remembered next time you use the Thesaurus Look Up

  4. Enter a term to look up in the search text box. The Thesaurus Look Up screen displays an alphabetical list of authorised terms and operates as a ‘word wheel’ moving through the list as the first and subsequent letters are entered. Click the 'Clear Filter' button to reset the word wheel.  Terms are cross-referenced to related and preferred terms. Note that if you have System Property ThesAutoRef set to FALSE the word wheel will not be apparent and the 'Clear Filter' button will be replaced with a 'Refresh button'. Enter part of your term in the textbox and click either the 'Refresh' button or [ENTER] to refresh the grid below with terms containing your search value. Refer to Setting System Property Preferences for more details on changing the system property setting.

  5. Hold the cursor over a term to view the full word display and scope notes for the highlighted term

  1. Right mouse click on a term to display cross-references

  2. Right mouse click on a term to Show Catalogue records that use the highlighted term

  3. Click Clear Filter (in Word Wheel mode) or delete the term and click Refresh (in non-Word Wheel mode) to clear string from the search text box and search for another term

  4. Double click on a term to display the full Thesaurus Display

Searching for a String Within a Term

  1. Click the Thesaurus icon next to an authority controlled field in a Catalogue Display, Patron Display, Thesaurus Display, Catalogue Search, Catalogue Search or Thesaurus Search screen. The Thesaurus Look Up screen is displayed

  2. Select Author, Series, Subject or other type from the Type pop-up list

  3. Select Containing from the Search Type drop-down list. This value will be remembered next time you use the Thesaurus Look Up

  4. Enter the term or string of characters to look-up in the search field

  5. Click REFRESH or the [Enter] key

Searching for a Term Ending with a String

  1. Click the Thesaurus icon next to an authority controlled field in a Catalogue Display, Patron Display, Thesaurus Display, Catalogue Search, Catalogue Search or Thesaurus Search screen. The Thesaurus Look Up screen is displayed

  2. Select Author, Series, Subject or other type from the Type pop-up list

  3. Select Ending With from the Search Type drop-down list. This value will be remembered next time you use the Thesaurus Look Up

  4. Enter the term or string of characters to look-up in the search field

  5. Click REFRESH or the [Enter] key
