Category Relationships Overview

FIRST includes functionality to allow you to categories information for display on the FIRST web interface (OPAC).

Information relevant to a given category is displayed in the form of dynamic online information products.

These online products may be targeted to users who have an expressed an interest in given categories of information.

A taxonomy of categories is used to group information relevant to a particular category. The concept of a taxonomy relates to the science, laws, or principles of classification i.e., systematics.

Library science uses the concept of taxonomy in the form of authorised list of Subjects applied to library materials during the cataloguing process to describe the subject content of that material.

In a similar way, a taxonomy of categories is used to describe the category relationship of information items in a collection.

The same taxonomy is used to link users interested in particular categories.

The FIRST web interface (OPAC) is customised to dynamically publish targeted information products to users based on matches with terms assigned from various taxonomies.
